The woman who wished she lived in a trunk
She once had a lovely home, and she often joked, “I wish I lived in a trunk.” Later she told Shinn: “Today I am living in that trunk.”
“The subconscious mind has no sense of humor.”

The little book she published herself
Florence Scovel Shinn was a New York illustrator. She drew pictures for magazines like Harper's and for popular novels. In her middle years she became a teacher, and she wrote down what she taught in plain, lively language, full of short stories about the people who came to her for help.
In 1925 she published The Game of Life and How to Play It herself. The Library of Congress still lists the first edition that way: 77 pages, New York, 1925, with "Florence S. Shinn" as the publisher.
Three years later she published a sequel, Your Word Is Your Wand, again under her own name.
A century later, The Game of Life is still a bestseller.
Now you can keep both books, complete, in one hardcover made to last.
